CLOVIS, N.M. – A man has been sentenced to more than two decades in prison for his role in the robbery and killing of a Honduran roofer in Clovis nearly three years ago.
Cordney Chardai Cooper was sentenced to 21 years on January 28 following a plea hearing at the Curry County District Courthouse, Ninth Judicial District Attorney Quentin Ray announced. Judge Drew Tatum presided over the hearing.
Cooper pleaded guilty to accessory to second-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the July 9, 2023, death of Anival Ulloa-Salguero, who was working as a roofer in Clovis when he was killed.
Police responded to the area of 9th Street and Davis Street on the morning of July 9, 2023, after receiving reports of shots fired. Officers found Ulloa-Salguero dead at the scene from a gunshot wound.
The investigation revealed that two masked individuals attempted to rob Ulloa-Salguero and shot him before fleeing. The Clovis Police Department worked with the Ninth Judicial District Major Crime Unit to investigate the case, using witness statements, physical evidence, digital evidence and extensive follow-up work to identify multiple people involved in the deadly robbery.
“This case serves as a sobering reminder of the real consequences for those involved in ongoing criminal activity no matter their role,” Ray said in a statement. “Our community has had too many senseless deaths and the District Attorney’s office will continue to seek justice for victims of crime and holding those involved in shootings accountable.”
