Mobile, Alabama—the domed roof of the Mobile Civic Center collapsed Wednesday morning after record snowfall.

The Mobile Civic Center is currently undergoing demolition by the city, but the “excessive snow,” recorded at 7.5 inches, caused the roof to collapse early. A witness stated that he “heard it and felt the ground shake.”

Jason Johnson, city spokesman, stated that there were no injuries. “Based on an initial evaluation of the site, the arena’s roof did collapse in on itself due to the snow load. It fell in a manner that was consistent with the plans for demolition. There were no injuries and the mosaic murals have not been damaged.” Johnson said.

The city of Mobile has extended its Proclamation of Civil Emergency due to the weather conditions. Demolition on the Civic Center is presumed to continue, with one less task on the to do list.
