Kerry, Ireland — At about 7 a.m. Monday morning, the roof of Tralee Sports Complex in Ireland collapsed. Reports state that no one was in the building at the time of the incident.

The collapse to the facility, which includes a large sports hall, two pools, and a gym, happened after heavy snowfall from Sunday into Monday morning. Fortunately there were no injuries as this occurred at a time when the building was empty.

The cause for the collapse has yet to be determined. Assistant manager Gerard McDonnell said “Obviously we can’t say for definite what caused it until we hear back from structural engineers but I would imagine that it would be something to do with the amount of the snow that fell as well as the age of the roof too possibly.”

As for how long it will be before the complex can open again McDonnell noted “There are a lot of things that need to be done, an investigation needs to take place. We will see if we can look at opening parts of the building but we may have to wait until the whole job is done. There’s a whole lot of different situations to address and see what happens next.” For now the building remains closed indefinitely.
