KANO, Nigeria– A Sharia Court in Kano has sentenced a 35-year-old man, Sabiu Abdullahi, to 50 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to stealing five pieces of roofing sheets.
The defendant, a resident of Mariri Quarters in Kano, was charged with trespassing and theft, offenses which violate Sections 134 and 287 of the Kano State Penal Code Law.
According to Prosecuting Counsel Zahradeen Abubakar, the case was reported to the Mariri Police Station on July 21 by Anas Yakubu of Tamburawa Quarters. Abubakar stated that Abdullahi unlawfully entered Yakubu’s property while he was away and stole the roofing materials.
During Friday’s hearing, Judge Malam Umar Lawal delivered the ruling and ordered that Abdullahi receive 50 strokes from a cane as punishment for the crime.
