Tesla Abandons Solar Roof After Nearly a Decade

Tesla appears to have officially pulled the plug on one of its most ambitious home-energy products: the Tesla Solar Roof.

Nearly a decade after Elon Musk unveiled the sleek glass roofing tiles as an alternative to traditional roofing materials with solar panels mounted on top, Tesla has stopped offering the Solar Roof through its website. The former Solar Roof page now redirects visitors to Tesla’s conventional solar panel offering.

The change effectively brings an end to a product that generated enormous attention when it debuted in 2016 but never came close to achieving the installation volume Tesla originally envisioned.

However, Tesla isn’t abandoning residential solar.

Instead, the company appears to be fundamentally changing its strategy by moving away from trying to reinvent the roof itself and focusing instead on conventional solar panels, Powerwall battery storage, and a growing network of third-party installers.

For the roofing and solar industries, the end of Tesla’s Solar Roof offers an interesting lesson about the challenges of combining two complicated trades into a single product.

What Happened to the Tesla Solar Roof?

Tesla introduced the Solar Roof in 2016 shortly after announcing its approximately $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity.

Rather than installing traditional solar panels over asphalt shingles or another roofing material, Tesla’s concept was to make the roofing material itself generate electricity.

The system used glass roof tiles, with solar-producing tiles integrated alongside visually similar non-solar tiles.

The company marketed Solar Roof as a more attractive alternative for homeowners who wanted solar energy without large panels mounted above their roofing system.

But turning that idea into an affordable, easily installed roofing product proved much more difficult.

Tesla Once Wanted to Install 1,000 Solar Roofs Per Week

Tesla had extremely ambitious expectations for the product.

At one point, the company targeted production and installation volumes of approximately 1,000 Solar Roof systems per week.

Actual installations reportedly fell far short of that goal.

Industry estimates indicated that Tesla had installed only about 3,000 Solar Roof systems in the United States by the end of 2022. That represented only a tiny fraction of the residential solar market.

The product faced several obstacles throughout its life, including:

  • High installation costs
  • Complicated installation procedures
  • Manufacturing challenges
  • Limited installer availability
  • Long installation timelines
  • Difficulty scaling production
  • Competition from conventional roofing combined with standard solar panels

Tesla also experienced manufacturing problems at its Buffalo, New York facility, which had been expected to play a major role in Solar Roof production.

After years of attempting to scale the product, Tesla now appears to have concluded that conventional solar panels offer a much simpler path forward.

Tesla’s Solar Roof Page Now Redirects to Solar Panels

One of the clearest indications that Solar Roof is finished is Tesla’s own website.

The company’s former Solar Roof page now redirects visitors to its Solar Panels offering.

Instead of choosing between Solar Roof and conventional panels, residential customers are now being directed toward a more traditional rooftop solar system.

That doesn’t mean Tesla is retreating from solar manufacturing.

In fact, the opposite may be happening.

Tesla Has Introduced Its Own 420-Watt Solar Panel

In January 2026, Tesla introduced a new 420-watt residential solar panel manufactured in the United States.

The panels are assembled at Tesla’s Buffalo facility—the same factory associated with Solar Roof production.

According to Tesla, this is the first solar panel that the company has fully designed and manufactured itself.

The all-black panel incorporates integrated mounting and is designed to perform well even when portions of the system experience shade.

More importantly, Tesla’s new residential solar strategy increasingly revolves around pairing these panels with the company’s Powerwall 3 home battery.

Tesla’s online design system now emphasizes a:

Solar Panels + Powerwall 3

configuration.

Customers can still purchase solar without battery storage, but Powerwall is prominently integrated into Tesla’s residential energy offering.

That reflects a broader change in the solar market.

For many homeowners, the sales pitch is no longer simply about reducing an electric bill. Solar combined with battery storage can also provide backup electricity during outages and allow homeowners to store electricity for periods when utility rates are higher.

Tesla Is Also Moving Away From Installing Everything Itself

Another major change has been happening behind the scenes.

Tesla increasingly appears to want other companies to handle the labor-intensive process of installing its residential energy products.

Beginning in 2024, Tesla expanded efforts to recruit and train third-party Tesla Certified Installers.

Tesla’s support information describes a hybrid installation model. In some areas, Tesla may still perform installations directly. In others, trained Certified Installers sell and install Tesla energy products.

Tesla’s partner network has reportedly grown from roughly 2,000 installers across 14 countries in late 2024 to more than 7,000 installers in over 35 countries.

That represents a dramatically different business model from SolarCity.

When Tesla purchased SolarCity in 2016, it acquired what was then the largest residential solar installer in the United States.

A decade later, Tesla increasingly looks less like a national solar contractor and more like a manufacturer and technology provider supplying a network of independent installers.

Why Solar Roof Was Particularly Difficult to Scale

From a roofing perspective, some of the challenges surrounding Solar Roof aren’t especially surprising.

A conventional rooftop solar project generally involves two relatively distinct systems.

A roofing contractor installs a roof.

A solar installer mounts a solar array over that roof.

Tesla attempted to combine those systems.

That creates additional complexity because the installer isn’t simply installing solar equipment. The installer is effectively installing the home’s weather-protection system and its electrical-generation system simultaneously.

That requires expertise spanning roofing, electrical work, flashing, waterproofing, solar design and local permitting requirements.

A mistake involving conventional solar mounting hardware can create a roof leak.

With an integrated solar roof, however, the solar product is part of the roof’s primary weather barrier.

That raises the stakes considerably.

It also makes building a nationwide installation workforce much more difficult.

Conventional Solar Panels Have a Major Advantage: The Roofers Already Exist

Tesla’s move toward conventional solar panels and independent installers could ultimately prove much easier to scale.

There are already tens of thousands of established roofing, electrical and solar contractors throughout the United States.

Rather than trying to build and manage a massive installation workforce, Tesla can manufacture equipment and allow local contractors to handle installation.

It’s a model already common throughout the construction industry.

Manufacturers typically don’t install their own shingles, siding, windows or HVAC systems.

They manufacture products.

Contractors install them.

Tesla’s evolving solar strategy increasingly resembles that traditional manufacturer-contractor relationship.

The Solar Roof Wasn’t Necessarily a Bad Idea

The disappearance of Solar Roof doesn’t necessarily mean the original concept was flawed.

Building solar generation directly into roofing materials remains an attractive idea.

For homeowners who dislike the appearance of conventional solar panels, an integrated solar roofing system potentially offers a much cleaner aesthetic.

The challenge is economics and installation.

A product can be technologically impressive and still fail if it is too expensive or difficult to install at scale.

Tesla spent nearly a decade attempting to solve that problem with Solar Roof.

Ultimately, conventional solar panels remained simpler, more familiar and easier to deploy.

Tesla’s Energy Business Is Actually Growing

The end of Solar Roof could easily create the impression that Tesla’s energy ambitions are struggling.

The larger picture is considerably different.

Tesla reported approximately $12.8 billion in energy generation and storage revenue in 2025, with much of the growth coming from battery-storage products such as Powerwall and the utility-scale Megapack.

The company is also pursuing significantly larger solar-manufacturing ambitions.

Reports indicate Tesla has proposed a massive solar-cell manufacturing facility outside Houston, Texas. The proposed project could represent an investment of approximately $10.1 billion and potentially create thousands of jobs.

In other words, Tesla may not be abandoning solar.

It may simply be abandoning the idea that Tesla needs to reinvent the roof in order to participate in it.

What Does This Mean for Homeowners With a Tesla Solar Roof?

The discontinuation also creates an important question for existing Solar Roof owners:

What happens when the roof needs repairs?

Unlike asphalt shingles or conventional solar panels, Solar Roof is a highly specialized proprietary roofing system.

Homeowners will likely want to pay close attention to Tesla’s continuing warranty, service and replacement-part policies.

The long-term availability of compatible tiles and qualified technicians could become particularly important as existing Solar Roof systems age.

This is one area where conventional roofing materials have a major advantage.

If an asphalt shingle roof needs service, there are thousands of roofing contractors capable of working on it. Proprietary integrated solar roofing systems can create a much smaller service ecosystem.

What Tesla’s Solar Roof Experiment Means for the Roofing Industry

Tesla Solar Roof may ultimately become an important case study for the roofing industry.

The concept demonstrated that consumers are interested in roofing products that do more than simply protect a building.

But it also demonstrated just how difficult it can be to disrupt the roofing installation process.

Roofs aren’t consumer electronics.

Every house is different.

Roof pitch, valleys, hips, penetrations, flashing details, ventilation, decking conditions and local building codes can vary dramatically from one project to another.

Installation still requires skilled people physically working on a roof.

That makes roofing particularly difficult to standardize at the scale technology companies typically pursue.

Integrated Solar Roofing Isn’t Dead

Tesla’s departure doesn’t mean solar roofing itself is disappearing.

Other manufacturers continue developing solar shingles and building-integrated photovoltaic roofing systems.

The long-term opportunity remains enormous: turn the millions of roofs replaced every year into potential energy-producing surfaces.

The winning technology, however, may ultimately be the one that integrates most easily into the roofing industry’s existing distribution and contractor networks rather than attempting to replace them.

That could be one of the biggest lessons from Tesla’s experiment.

The End of an Ambitious Roofing Experiment

When Tesla Solar Roof debuted in 2016, it looked like a glimpse into the future of roofing.

Ten years later, Tesla appears to have quietly closed that chapter.

The company’s Solar Roof webpage now redirects customers toward conventional solar panels, while Tesla increasingly focuses its residential energy strategy around its own solar panels, Powerwall battery storage and independent Certified Installers.

For Tesla, that may simply be good business.

Manufacturing standardized solar panels and batteries is considerably easier to scale than managing thousands of highly customized roofing projects.

For the roofing industry, however, Tesla Solar Roof leaves behind an interesting lesson.

It turns out that reinventing solar technology may be easier than reinventing the roof.
